Dealing with Back Pain
Most people struggle with back pain at some point in their lives. If you have back pain that doesn't go away within a day or two, it's important to seek treatment, as you may be dealing with an injury. At French Family Chiropractic in Erin and Clarksville, our chiropractic care staff is here to help you find relief from back pain.
Types of Back Pain
There are many different types of back pain. The type of back pain you are experiencing will guide the treatment for your pain. Some people experience chronic back pain, which is pain that has lasted for 12 weeks or longer. Others experience acute back pain, which is caused by an illness or injury. It's possible for acute pain to develop into chronic pain over time.
Back pain can also be categorized by wherein the back it occurs. Upper back pain (also known as pain in the cervical spine) may radiate to the shoulders and neck, causing headaches and migraines. Low back pain may radiate to the hips, legs, and buttocks.
Common Causes of Back Pain
Two of the most common causes of back pain are a herniated disc or slipped disc. In between each of the vertebrae of the spine, there are small, soft cushions called discs. These discs make it possible for your vertebrae to move comfortably. Each disc is filled with a jelly-like material to cushion the movement of the bone. Sometimes, this jelly is pushed out of the disc's tough exterior, and presses on a nerve, causing pain. This is known as a herniated or slipped disc.
Back pain is also often caused by repetitive motion, poor posture, poor sleep positioning, and stress.
How Chiropractic Care Can Help
When you come into French Family Chiropractic, you'll meet with our chiropractor to talk about your back pain. We'll create a treatment plan for you to help you restore your back. Many of our patients benefit from spinal decompression, which can relieve some of the pain associated with a herniated disc. In order to decompress your spine, we use chiropractic traction to allow your spine to move back into its original place. We also may recommend massage to ease the sore muscles that can result from a misaligned spine.
